DALLAS, Texas, November 11, 2008 – In a move to stay ahead of the demand for driving value with innovative social computing solutions, Telligent today released the latest version of its business intelligence tool, Harvest™ Reporting Server, and expanded its technology leadership team with the addition of Dr. Marc A. Smith.

As Chief Social Scientist, Dr. Marc A. Smith will lead Telligent's Research & Development efforts around advanced social analytics and business intelligence—specifically enhancing Harvest—to provide customers critical ROI measurement of their communities. Dr. Smith is a renowned expert in the sociology of computer-mediated collective actions: the ways group dynamics change when they take place in and through social cyberspaces.

  • Prior to joining Telligent, Marc was the Senior Research Sociologist for Microsoft’s Research & Development team.
  • Marc received his B.S. in International Area Studies from Drexel University, an M.Phil. in Social Theory from Cambridge University, and his Ph.D. in Sociology from UCLA. He remains an affiliate professor of sociology at the University of Washington in Seattle.
  • For the last 15+ years, Marc has been instrumental in defining, understanding, and describing the valuable relationships that people form in online communities and social media.
  • Marc is co-editor of Communities in Cyberspace (Routledge), a collection of essays exploring the ways identity, interaction, and social order develop in online groups. He has also published many peer-reviewed papers that have documented the ways online groups operate and can be enhanced.
